What we do

Fighting Fit has over a decade worth of experience delivering our Olympic sport in schools and at our centre of excellence in Islington. Our programme has a proven track record of delivering both a quality recreational activity and of finding fencing stars of the future. Fighting Fit has, for the last six years, been exceptionally proud to say that our youngsters have become the most successful club fencers in our discipline in the UK.

The art of fencing is a fantastic activity for young people. Its ancient origins mean that traditional values of good behaviour, sportsmanship, respect and good manners are at the heart of what we teach. Whilst our sport will deliver more physical benefits than a lot of other sports, fencing is also a game of strategy, tactics and all round mental agility.

All of our beginners’ sessions use Olympic style metal fencing equipment NOT the plastic imitations. We only do the real thing here.

Our Coaching Method

All of our classes are delivered by our fully trained and enthusiastic coaches who have been CRB checked. Our lesson plans include all of the fencing actions and movements appropriate for the age of the participants. Our programme also includes refereeing, fencing etiquette, games, fitness exercises and observational skills. We use several different styles of teaching during the sessions:

Reciprocal Style:

Fencers take some responsibility for their own development. This is monitored at all times by the coach.

Problem solving:

The fencer is given problems to think about and solve throughout the session, which gives them the space to understand why certain etiquette is followed.

Guided discovery:

Our favourite way to teach our fencers. All participating children have the opportunity to explore various movements.

Throughout the lesson our coaches monitor the safety and wellbeing of the children. We are strict but fair and all children are fully knowledgeable with the rules. We ask children to problem solve the reasons why the rules should be followed.

Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD)

Our fencers, many of which started on our schools’ program, have led to us becoming one of the most successful fencing organisations in the UK. Over the last few years we have had several National Champions, with Great Britain and England representatives at both world and European level.

To encourage your children to take the first steps on their path to success, we offer all participants in our schools programme the chance to come to our fencing centre for a free trial session.

If one of our coaches identifies a fencer that shows exceptional fencing ability, they may award them a mini scholarship to our club. This will offer the fencer a minimum of one month’s membership so that they can train with our leading fencers. If they continue to show promise, they may then be offered a full membership.
