Fighting Fit has over a decade worth of experience delivering our Olympic sport in schools and at our centre of excellence in Islington. Our program has a proven tried and tested record of delivering both a quality recreational activity and of finding champions and fencing stars of the future. Fighting Fit has, for the last six years, been exceptionally proud to say that our youngsters have become the most successful club fencers in our discipline in the UK
The art of fencing is a fantastic activity for young people, its ancient origins mean that traditional values of good behaviour, sportsmanship, respect and good manners are at the heart of what we teach. Whilst our sport will deliver more physical benefits than a lot of other sports, fencing is also a game of strategy, tactics and all round mental agility. Fencing, the European martial art, is often referred to as a game of chess with a sword. Consequently, we continually find that we appeal to those young people that have yet to find a sport of choice.
All our beginners' sessions use Olympic style metal fencing equipment NOT the plastic imitation stuff. We only do the real thing here...
All of our classes are delivered by fully trained, CRB checked, enthusiastic coaches according to our term based lesson plans. Our lesson plans include all the fencing actions and movements appropriate for the age of the participants. Our program also includes refereeing, fencing etiquette, games, fitness exercises and observational skills. We use several different styles of teaching during the sessions:
Fencers take some responsibility for their own development - monitored at all times by the coach. This gives the children the chance to express their wishes, moreover allowing the fencers the opportunity to learn how important communication and respecting other opinions is vital to learning.
The fencer is given problems to think about and solve throughout the session. The fencer soon starts to understand why certain movements, stances and etiquette is followed for themselves. Not just because they are told to do so.
Our favorite way to teach our fencers. All participating children have the opportunity to explore various options, movements etc. all pertaining to fencing. The children love to try something new and those with the boldest ideas fully immerse themselves in the lesson. We have found that when all the children are involved in the questions and answers their awareness of the sport increases immeasurably.
Throughout the lesson our coaches monitor the safety and wellbeing of the children. We are quite strict but fair and all the children are fully knowledgeable with the rules. We aim not to start each lesson with a "Do Not" but explain and ask the children to problem solve the reasons why the rules should be followed. For those that do not wish to participate or follow the rules a warning will be given followed by exclusion for a short period of time. This normally works well as the last thing they want to miss out on is the fencing part!
Whilst we are always looking to introduce as many young people in to our schools’ program as possible we are constantly on the lookout for Olympic stars of the future.
Fighting fit has a fencing centre of excellence in Islington. Our fencers, many of which started on our schools’ program, have led to us becoming one of the most successful fencing organisations in the UK. Over the last few years we have had several National Champions, GB and England representatives at world and European level.
To encourage your children to take the first steps on their pathway to success we offer all participants in our schools program the chance to come to our fencing centre for a free trial session.
If one of our coaches identifies a fencer that shows exceptional fencing ability they may award them a mini scholarship to our club. This will offer the fencer a minimum of 1 month’s membership so that they can train with our leading fencers. If they continue to show promise they may then be offered membership of our center so that they can reach their full potential within our sport
